Story #1 Lucy Larke

Hi! My name is Lucy, I’m 10 nearly 11 years old. When Mum saw the Encore Story Post I had butterflies in my stomach, because I didn’t really want to share my story. After thinking about it for a little bit I decided, why not?

Why did I choose Encore and what has it done for me? To be honest, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I joined Encore just over a year ago. I had never danced in a team situation and certainly never competed in any competitions. As soon as I started I realised just how much I loved the feeling I got when I learned a new move or was told I was good at something. I have never felt these successes before.

School for me is a BIG struggle, I read slowly and I struggle with Maths. I have what is known as dyslexia and dyscalculia. This means, my brain makes it really hard for me to read, spell and remember numbers. I can do it, but it takes me a bit longer than the average person to work things out.

This is why I love to dance. I am just me! I am not judged on how good my spelling is or what reading level of I am on, and no one judges me if I forget something. Encore makes me feel proud that I am part of a team. It’s like a big warm hug only a family can give. I always walk out of my practises knowing I have worked hard, with my head held high.
